Congratulations to Andile Mlambo for his appointment into the Presidential Climate Commission.
When Andile Mlambo walked into the Rights and Remedies School in 2023, he did so with a clear purpose: to ensure that the struggles of communities are not spoken about without them, but carried forward by them. As a graduate of the Rights and Remedies 2023 class, Andile has gone on to become a powerful organiser and advocate, known for his ability to mobilise communities and bring people together around shared struggles. What makes his work especially significant is his focus on the intersection between environmental justice and disability rights. In spaces where people living with disabilities are often overlooked or excluded, Andile has consistently insisted that their voices, experiences, and leadership belong at the centre of the environmental movement.
Through his activism, Andile has shown that environmental harm does not affect all people equally; it is those already marginalised who often bear the greatest burden. His work calls for an approach that is inclusive, accessible, and grounded in the realities of everyday life.
We proudly congratulate Andile on his appointment to the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC). This milestone is not only a personal achievement, but a powerful moment for the communities he represents. Andile’s presence in this space ensures that perspectives often left out of policy conversations—particularly those of people living with disabilities and other marginalised groups—are brought directly into national climate and environmental decision-making. His appointment signals an important step toward a more just and people-centred approach to climate governance.
At the Centre for Environmental Rights, we remain committed to strengthening youth leadership and equipping young people to become bold opinion-makers who challenge injustice. This is why we proudly run the Rights and Remedies School—a space that continues to grow new leaders who are stepping forward, organising their communities, and demanding justice in the environmental space. Through this work, the Centre for Environmental Rights is actively building a movement of environmental justice leaders.
Andile Mlambo’s journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when young people are supported to lead, to challenge power, and to carry the voices of their communities into the spaces where decisions are made.
